What should I check before using a flatbed semi-trailer?

1. Connecting Tractor Truck and Trailer

Fifth Wheel and Kingpin: Make sure the kingpin is fully locked into the fifth wheel. The lock indicator must show "LOCK". Tug it by hand to confirm it's secure. Check the fifth wheel lock jaws for wear or cracks.

Air Lines: Connect the red supply line and the yellow control line from the tractor truck to the flatbed trailer. Check that the connectors are not leaking and the O-rings are in good condition.

Test Emergency Brake: Start the engine. Wait for the air pressure to build up. Then, pull out the flat bed trailer emergency brake valve to check if the trailer brakes automatically lock.

Electrical Cable: Connect the 7-pin electrical cable. Check if all trailer lights work properly (turn signals, brake lights, side markers, reverse lights).

2. Flatbed Trailer Check

Tires: Check the air pressure in all tires (including the spare). Look for cuts, bulges, or unusual wear on the tread. Check if the lug nuts are tight.

Axles and Suspension: Check the leaf springs or air suspension for any breaks. Make sure the U-bolts are tight.

Brake System: Check if the brake chamber push rod stroke is normal and check the brake pad wear.

Body Structure: Check the main frame and side rails for any visible cracks or damage.

Equipment Onboard: Make sure the flat deck trailer has load binders (ratchet straps), tie-downs (webbing/chains), wheel chocks, and safety cones.
